Animal Welfare Groups Condemn Rising Cases of Animal Cruelty in Belize

Eleven animal welfare organizations across Belize have joined their voices to speak out against the increasing violence toward animals, particularly by members of the police force and utility workers. Their outrage follows a recent incident in which officers from the Cayo Police Department fatally shot a family dog on March 2. The dog, which was reportedly shot in the back, showed no signs of aggression beyond what officers claimed.

This is just one of several cases over the past year involving the police killing pet dogs, raising serious concerns about a pattern of cruelty. The issue was further highlighted by another incident involving the pet of the Governor General.

Additionally, in the Orange Walk District, a Belize Water Services Limited (BWS) employee allegedly entered a yard unannounced and kicked a dog in the head, leaving it severely injured. In a separate case, another BWS employee reportedly sprayed pepper spray at a family pet.

Reports of horse abuse have also surfaced, with animals being forced to endure harsh conditions—ridden on scorching concrete streets without food, water, or shelter, and left beaten and starved.

Animal rights groups are calling on the Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, to conduct thorough investigations and hold those responsible accountable. They stress the need for immediate action, including stricter penalties for acts of animal cruelty.

Activists warn that animal cruelty in Belize has reached an alarming level, with little to no consequences for offenders. They insist that urgent measures must be taken to prevent further abuse.
