Aragon Calls for UDP Leadership Change, Endorses Tracy Panton

In a recent development within the United Democratic Party (UDP), former Minister and Area Representative Elodio Aragon, the party's Orange Walk East standard bearer, has called on Hon. Moses "Shyne" Barrow to step down as party leader, stating his support for Hon. Tracy Panton.

Aragon's announcement follows the Unity National Convention on October 20, where 333 out of 535 delegates voted in favor of Panton's leadership, indicating a demand for change within the UDP.

In a letter addressed to Barrow, Aragon emphasized that after careful consideration, he and his supporters have concluded that the party would be better served by Tracy Panton's leadership. He states that the decision was made after listening to the voices of the delegates and supporters and recognizing the need for unity and a clear path forward. Aragon describes the vote as a mandate for change and emphasizes the importance of respecting the will of the delegates.

Aragon provides specific reasons for his call for a leadership change, noting that numerous discussions and reflections have made it clear that a new direction is necessary. He calls for all standard bearers to sit with their delegates and alternates to discuss the leadership situation, stressing the importance of considering the best interest of both the party and the people of Belize. Aragon highlights the need for responsible leadership that puts the needs of the people first.

Aragon also reaffirms his endorsement of Hon. Tracy Panton as the Interim Leader, along with Sheena Pitts as the Interim Chairman. He emphasizes that unity within the UDP is crucial to present a strong front as the party moves toward the next general elections. Aragon concludes by urging all members to come together and support Panton's leadership, stating that stable and inclusive leadership is vital for the party's future success.

Aragon's decision to endorse Tracy Panton presents a direct challenge to Shyne's authority, highlighting ongoing divisions within the UDP.
