Belize and UN Sign New Plan for Sustainable Development

The Government of Belize and the United Nations (UN) have officially signed a new Country Implementation Plan (CIP) for 2024-2025. This plan was agreed upon during the 4th Joint National Steering Committee Meeting, which was led by H.E. Amalia Mai, CEO in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Mr. Raul Salazar, the UN Resident Coordinator for Belize and El Salvador.

This new plan is part of the UN’s Multi-Country Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNMSDCF) 2022-2026. This framework, which covers countries in the Caribbean, was adopted by Belize in December 2021.

The meeting covered several important topics, including an update on Belize’s progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and preparations for a national Youth Dialogue on August 9, 2024. This dialogue will help shape discussions for the global Summit of the Future in September, held during the 79th UN General Assembly.

H.E. Amalia Mai emphasized the importance of working closely with the UN to achieve the SDGs by 2030. She noted that this partnership helps Belize align its national development plans with international commitments.

A key moment in the meeting was the formal signing of the UN Country Implementation Plan (CIP) for 2024-2025. This plan includes a range of projects across various areas and has a total budget of $47 million. The plan will be implemented by multiple UN agencies and will focus on shared prosperity and economic resilience, equality and well-being, resilience to climate change and sustainable natural resource management, and peace, safety, justice, and the rule of law.

Mr. Raul Salazar emphasized that the UN remains dedicated to supporting Belize in addressing its economic, social, and environmental challenges. He stressed that the new CIP reflects the needs and priorities of Belize’s communities and aims to improve the living conditions of all Belizeans.

Both the Government of Belize and the UN are excited about this new plan and are committed to working together to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for Belize.
