The Government of Belize has kicked off a two-day National Enforcement Workshop aimed at enhancing the management and protection of the country's marine and coastal resources. This workshop is part of the Belize Blue Bonds initiative, which focuses on strengthening governance and improving monitoring of Belize’s blue space.
The workshop, which began today, brings together key national stakeholders from government, non-government organizations, fisheries associations, and academia. The main goal is to identify gaps and opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of fisheries enforcement and conservation monitoring.
Over the next two days, participants will collaborate to develop priority strategies and actions that will help shape a National Enforcement and Conservation Monitoring Strategy and Action Plan. This plan aims to enhance fisheries enforcement and conservation efforts through a coordinated national approach.
The new strategy and action plan will guide better decision-making for protecting Belize’s marine and coastal resources and supporting the livelihoods of Belizeans. The completed strategy and action plan are expected by March 2025.
The workshop and the development of the strategy are led by the Fisheries Department and the Belize Coast Guard, with support from the Blue Bond and Finance Permanence Unit, the Belize Fund, and The Nature Conservancy.
