Belize Launches New 2024 Community Health Workers Manual to Boost Local Health Care

The Ministry of Health & Wellness, with backing from UNICEF Belize, has introduced the updated Community Health Worker’s (CHW) Manual and Job Aide tool.

Launched this week at the Old Belize Conference Room, this new manual highlights the ministry’s and UNICEF’s dedication to improving community health. The Ministry thanked all the teams whose hard work led to the manual’s completion.

While the 2013 Competency-based Training Curriculum laid the groundwork, the revised manual goes further, covering new areas like mental and adolescent health. It also includes new teaching methods to boost skill-building and health promotion.

UNICEF recognizes the crucial role of community health programs in reaching children and mothers who need help the most. CHWs are essential in making primary health care accessible to underserved communities and contribute greatly to Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNICEF has been supporting Belize’s CHW program since 1982.

Alison Parker, UNICEF Representative to Belize, emphasized their support, saying, “CHWs are a vital link between the formal health system and the community. They help address health needs and strengthen the health system. It’s important they receive the right training and support to deliver the best care. UNICEF will keep investing in a skilled, professional, and resilient community health program that reaches every child.”
