Belize Takes Over OAS Chairmanship Amid Regional Challenges

Belize has officially taken on the Chairmanship of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS). During a formal ceremony at the OAS headquarters, Ambassador Victor Fernandes from Barbados passed the ceremonial gavel to H.E. Ambassador Lynn Young, Permanent Representative of Belize.

This leadership comes at a critical time for the Americas. Ambassador Young's appointment highlights Belize's commitment to regional cooperation, democracy, and development—key values of the OAS.

In his acceptance speech, Ambassador Young expressed a strong sense of responsibility and reiterated Belize’s dedication to the OAS's mission, stating, “Belize remains deeply committed to the core principles that define the OAS: democracy, human rights, multidimensional security, and integral development.”

Ambassador Young’s tenure begins as the region faces significant challenges, particularly the political and humanitarian crises in Haiti and Venezuela. He emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation in Haiti, saying, “The political instability and humanitarian disaster there require our immediate attention. Belize stands in solidarity with the Haitian people and supports efforts to stabilize the country and restore democracy.”

He also highlighted the need to tackle socio-economic issues in the region, focusing on poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. “The OAS must help member states address these challenges. We need strategies that empower the vulnerable and improve access to education, healthcare, and decent jobs,” he added.

Additionally, Ambassador Young pointed out the importance of strengthening the OAS itself, emphasizing the need for financial stability within the organization. He said, “To address the pressing issues in Haiti, Venezuela, and beyond, we must enhance the OAS’s financial sustainability and operational capacity.”

He concluded his remarks by calling for unity and collective action among member states, stating, “While the challenges we face are complex, we have unique opportunities to work together for a more peaceful, prosperous, and equitable future for everyone.”
