Belize Unveils Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development of Ambergris Caye

The Government of Belize, with assistance from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), has completed a new strategic plan aimed at ensuring the sustainable development of Ambergris Caye, one of the country’s top tourist destinations.

The plan outlines goals for the next 20 years, focusing on providing better urban services and strengthening important infrastructure like ports, airports, and roads. Ambergris Caye, however, faces challenges such as extreme weather and the potential loss of its natural resources, so it is important for the island to develop in a sustainable way.

The plan was created with guidance from a special task force set up by the Prime Minister of Belize, Hon. John Briceño, in 2022. This group included government ministers, the Mayor of San Pedro, and people from the private sector. They worked together to make sure the development of Ambergris Caye would be smart, sustainable, and beneficial for the future.

The development process involved a thorough study of the island, looking at natural risks, growth patterns, and the resources available for future development. It also included feedback from 15 workshops with local residents, business leaders, and other stakeholders.

The plan includes several important projects, such as new airport facilities, improved roads, expanded water and sewer services, and upgrades to the electrical network. Additionally, there are plans to improve neighborhoods, make housing more accessible, and build new health facilities to serve residents and visitors.

The Hon. Christopher Coye, Belize’s Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment, emphasized that this plan is about creating long-term prosperity for the island. He said, "We aim to build a resilient and thriving environment that benefits both locals and visitors."

Rocío Medina Bolívar, the IDB Country Representative for Belize, expressed the bank's commitment to supporting Belize’s vision. She said, “The IDB is proud to help Belize create this plan, which focuses on resilient infrastructure, sustainability, and inclusive growth. We are excited to continue partnering with the Government to achieve these goals and improve lives on Ambergris Caye.”

To fund these projects, the plan suggests that up to US$270 million will be needed over the next 20 years.

The official launch of the strategic plan is scheduled for April 2025.
