Crime Down by almost 17% in 2024, But Murders Edge Up

Crime statistics for 2024 indicate an overall reduction in major offenses compared to the same period in 2023; however, murders have shown a slight increase, up by one from 65 to 66.

While most categories such as burglary and theft decreased significantly, murders and unlawful sexual intercourse increased, posing concerns for law enforcement.

Data from January to August show notable declines in categories like burglary, which fell from 398 in 2023 to 300 in 2024, representing a 24.6% reduction.

Theft also saw a drop from 84 cases in 2023 to 72 in 2024, indicating a 14.3% decrease. Robberies fell from 106 to 92, marking a modest improvement of 13.2%.

Despite these positive shifts in crime trends, two critical areas showed upticks: unlawful sexual intercourse, which rose from 37 cases to 41, and murder.
