NGOs Back Janelle Chanona to Continue as 13th Senator

The network of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in good standing has officially endorsed Janelle Chanona to continue serving as their representative in the Senate. This confirmation follows a call by the Belize Network of Non-Governmental Organizations (BNN) for nominations among organizations recognized by the Belize Company Corporate Affairs Registry (BCCAR).

No alternative candidates were proposed, nor were any objections raised. Instead, multiple endorsements in favor of Senator Chanona were submitted to the BNN Board of Directors, which expressed gratitude to the participating NGOs for their role in the democratic process.

Senator Chanona has represented NGOs in the Senate since March 2022. Upon accepting the endorsement, she stated, "It is an honor and privilege to be the voice of NGOs in the Senate. Together, we remain committed to working alongside the Government of Belize to utilize our collective expertise, resources, and influence in shaping policies that benefit all Belizeans, with a focus on women, youth, and marginalized communities. As global challenges highlight the importance of protecting democracy and freedom, we stand united in safeguarding these rights. Good governance and sustainable human development remain our top priorities."

Following the general elections on March 12, 2025, the BNN Board of Directors will submit a formal request to the Governor General for the reappointment of Janelle Andrea Chanona as the NGO Senator, in accordance with Section 61, 4(1) of the Belize Constitution. The official swearing-in ceremony will take place during the first session of the new parliamentary term.
