Oceana Launches Reef Week with 12th Annual Ride to the Reef

Oceana kicked off Reef Week 2025 with its 12th annual Ride to the Reef, uniting over 60 cyclists in a 50-mile journey to raise awareness for Belize’s marine conservation efforts.

Under this year’s theme, “Building Resilience from Ridge to Reef,” riders of all skill levels pedaled from the National Assembly Building in Belmopan to Memorial Park in Belize City. Their determination reflected a shared commitment to protecting Belize’s reefs, which sustain thousands of livelihoods and serve as a crucial natural resource.

“The Ride to the Reef is a powerful demonstration of Belizeans’ dedication to safeguarding our invaluable marine ecosystems,” said Janelle Chanona, Vice President of Oceana Belize. “With so many depending on the health of these habitats, we must ensure informed decision-making and take decisive action to protect them. When we act together, incredible things happen.”

Belize’s reefs are more than just scenic wonders; they provide food, employment, and drive the nation’s tourism industry. However, threats such as pollution, climate change, and offshore drilling continue to put these marine ecosystems at risk. Oceana reminds Belizeans that every action—whether inland or along the coast—impacts the health of the reef, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility.
