A video circulating on social media over the weekend has sparked widespread discussion after it showed an altercation involving Evan Thompson, a first-time City Councillor for the People's United Party (PUP). The incident, which took place on the Princess Margaret Drive strip, quickly gained traction online, prompting Thompson to issue a public statement addressing the matter.
In his statement, released on Monday, March 3, Thompson clarified that he was the victim in the altercation and acted solely in self-defense. According to him, the video does not provide the full context of the situation, and witnesses, including law enforcement, confirmed that the other individual was the aggressor. He also emphasized that at no point was he arrested or taken into custody in relation to the incident.
“I sincerely apologize if this incident has been perceived negatively. It is in no way a reflection of the Belize City Council or the People’s United Party, both of which I proudly serve with integrity and commitment,” Thompson stated.
Despite being given the option to press charges against the other party involved, Thompson stated that he has chosen not to pursue legal action. Instead, he expressed his desire to move forward and focus on his responsibilities as a City Councillor, reaffirming his commitment to working in the best interest of Belize City residents.
