Special Envoy Condemns Brutal Murder of Wendy Mendez

The Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Wendy Mendez, calling it a tragic case of domestic violence and a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in Belize.

In a statement issued on thursday, the Special Envoy expressed deep outrage and sorrow over Mendez’s death, emphasizing that the crime is even more disheartening as it occurred during Women’s Month—a time dedicated to celebrating and honoring women.

“This tragic case of domestic abuse turned murder is another painful reminder of the countless lives cut short due to gender-based violence,” the statement read. “Instead of celebrating the strength and resilience of our women, we find ourselves in mourning, grappling with another senseless act of violence that devastates families and undermines our collective sense of security.”

The Office of the Special Envoy extended its heartfelt condolences to Mendez’s family and urged law enforcement to ensure that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice. It also called on communities to take a stand against domestic violence by speaking up, intervening, and supporting victims in escaping cycles of abuse.

“Violence against women is not just a personal tragedy; it is a national crisis that demands our collective attention and action. Every attack on a woman is an attack on the very fabric of our Belizean society,” the statement emphasized.

Meanwhile, in Corozal, police continue their investigation into Mendez’s tragic murder in Concepcion Village. Authorities suspect that the 36-year-old may have been caught in a domestic dispute, particularly given that she had previously survived a near-fatal chopping incident in 2022.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, Mendez was attacked on Friday, March 9, and succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.

As Belize observes Women’s Month, the Special Envoy is urging the nation to take a stand against gender-based violence, prioritize the safety of women, and work toward a society where such tragedies no longer occur.
