Taiwanese Foreign Minister Visits Belize to Strengthen Ties

H.E. Lin Chia-Lung, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), arrived in Belize on October 29, 2024. He met with Belize’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Francis Fonseca, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.


During their discussions, the ministers emphasized their dedication to enhancing the strong and friendly relationship between Taiwan and Belize. They expressed a shared commitment to collaborate on initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, creating economic opportunities, and improving the well-being of their citizens.

Minister Fonseca expressed gratitude for Taiwan's support in constructing a new hospital in San Pedro, which will serve both local residents and tourists. Additionally, Minister Lin announced that Taiwan would provide financial assistance for the reconstruction of the Belcan Bridge in Belize City, responding to a request from Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño.


The ministers framed these initiatives within the broader context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting Taiwan’s potential contributions to global efforts. Minister Fonseca reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for Taiwan’s participation in the UN and its agencies.


In turn, Minister Lin thanked Belize for its steadfast support of Taiwan’s sovereignty and self-determination and praised the Belizean government for urging China to respect the wishes of the Taiwanese people.

Both ministers renewed their commitment to explore further avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
